I started diving about 17 years ago. My first dive was in Pulau Tenggol, Malaysia. I took the diving course after a few snorkeling trips around Malaysia with friends. As an active person, I have tried a number of water activities around the world too.
Back then, I paid about MYR800.00 per person to learn to dive under PADI Open Water via a Dive Master Instructor. We have to take an exam and pass the exam before we can start to dive in the open sea. With the Instructor and guarded by the Dive Masters. I am kind of lucky to have so many Dive Master around then.
While I was learning, I venture into purchasing a number of dive equipment from various shops. I hunt for dive gears in USA, in UK, in Singapore, in Hong Kong, in Australia, in New Zealand, in Male, in Japan and a few more cities. As an image freak, I ask and learn more of these dive gears function while hunting for them on my own. I realised all these dive gears were design with safety in mind. I like a few dive brands especially from USA, Australia and Japan.
At the end just before I did my first dive, I had dive gears from various cities in the world. I wanted pink.
Due to budget and time constraint, I end up with fluorescent apple green with grey dive suit of 7mm thick with a green flippers. My Dive Master told me, I do not need 7mm thickness in Malaysia water. I told her, I was afraid of cold. Actually a 'kiasu' syndrome. I had pink gloves from USA. I had pink TUSA dive rubber shoes, pink dive torches. Big and small. I even managed to get a dive knife in pink and green. Bought a pink dongle too for my breathing tank. I only end up calling for help each time, I needed to leave the water. Was new and didn't manage to control my breathing techniques back then.
My friends and Dive Instructor laughed at me back then for having a knife at my first stage of diving. Didn't know much about our Malaysian sea back then. Just because I had baby white tip sharks around us in Male during one of my snorkeling trip.
With my heart pumping, I created high flow of adrenalin in my body system each time before I dive. Having butterflies in my stomach certainly didn't help too. Was also told not to have a full meal before diving. I asked myself why then. With the urge of I really want to dive and see the beauty under the sea. I went ahead. I had to have to change my mind set. Guess what?
I started to pray....(....., please let us have a good and safe dive. Thank you.)
